Over ten sessions, we’ll explore the art, architecture, design and stories of the artists of the 1920s and 30s. In Europe - the growth of the Cote d’Azur; the glamorous circle of artists and writers around the Murphys; Eileen Gray and her nemesis Le Corbusier; the ‘new woman’ of Tamara de Lempicka and Coco Chanel; Matisse, Picasso’s return to classicism and lesser known rivals like Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, through to ‘Guernica’; the impact of Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, British realism, and more. In America – the American regionalists and paintings of Hopper, O’Keeffe and others, the chroniclers of Chicago like Archibald Motley and his Harlem Renaissance peers; through to the Great Depression and photographer Dorothea Lange and across the border not just to Kahlo and Riviera but to consider their Mexican contemporaries. We’ll also explore international styles like Art Deco.
