Art of the 1940s and early 50s

Over ten sessions, we’ll explore the art, architecture, design, and stories of the artists of the 40s and early 50s. Whilst of course the Second World War did have a huge impact on art, there were also innovative and joyous works like Matisse's 'Jazz' and Blue Nudes, Dali's sequences for Hitchcock, Frankenthaler's 'Mountains and Sea'...

We'll look at Eames, Dior's New Look, Moore, Hepworth and other British sculptors, the role of existentialism, film noir, the growth of Abstract Expressionism and what it meant for the careers and lives of the 'Ninth street women', the burgeoning Pop art scene, and so on.
