Only an hour apart by train, these two cities have different personalities. In Bratislava, Slovakia's capital, the entrance to the old town is marked by a medieval gate. This part is full of charming buildings, a contrast to the starker architecture of the Soviet era. Other landmarks are a castle with stunning views over the Danube, a blue church built in 1908, and a gallery of C20th Slovakian art.
Vienna is renowned for its elegance. Our visits will include the Kunsthistorisches Museum with its superb collection of Old Masters (e.g. the early Netherlandish school, Bruegel, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Titian etc.); the Belvedere Palace with works by Klimt and Schiele; Jugendstil former metro stations, the Secession Building with Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze; and MAK the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art. We will also experience some of Vienna’s famous café culture!
