2024 The Art and Culture of Umbria

A repeat of previous highly successful tours!

Umbria is the green heart of Italy and still much less discovered than its neighbour Tuscany.  But it is rich in history, culture, wine, and truffles with some stunning landscapes. Famous artworks include the Filippo Lippi fresco in Spoleto cathedral; the Raphael/Perugino fresco in Perugia; Giotto (maybe) frescoes in St Francis's basilica;

the Baglione Chapel in the Church of St. Maria Maggiore entirely frescoed by Pinturicchio between the late summer of 1500 and the spring of 1501 and modern artists like Burri or the Futurist Gerardo Dottori.

We will visit: Perugia, Assisi, Citta di Castello outskirts, Todi, Gubbio, Montefalco (producer of the famous wine), Spoleto and Spello and amid all the medieval and Renaissance art, we will have a tasting at a local vineyard and, of course, a stop at Hotel Alphabet for some contemporary art!

The course will be limited to 7 people. Travel between sites will be by minibus rather than public transport but as always there will be some walking as these are mostly hilltop towns.
