Calabria is perhaps Italy's most undervisited region. It's big, authentic, and inexpensive, but has some stunning landscapes, Blue Flag beaches, and a fascinating history.
This tour will be a cultural introduction so art but also food and wine experience-based. We will base ourselves for most of the stay in the resort town of Tropea, "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea," on the spectacular Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods). Visits will include: Pizzo; the ancient medieval sanctuary Santa Maria dell'Isola; Madonna di Piedigrotta, carved entirely out of tufo; the former ghost village of Pentedattilo that captivated Edward Lear; the pretty fishing village of Scilla; sampling Calabrian specialities like red onion and ’nduja, tartufo gelato, organic wines.
We will travel either by train (1hr 30) or minivan to Reggio Calabria, one of Calabria's most ancient cities, founded during Greek colonisation. Its National Archaeological Museum houses the famous C5th BCE Riace Bronzes and its Pinacoteca Civica has significant works by artists such as Antonello da Messina, Mattia Preti, Giuseppe Benassai, and Renato Guttuso.
